The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) has called on all presidential candidates in the 2024 elections to sign a National Pledge to combat illegal and irresponsible mining, also known as galamsey.

The pledge, developed in partnership with the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and various civic organizations, is designed to demonstrate political commitment to ending the destructive practice, which has severe consequences for Ghana’s waterbodies, forests, and public health.

In a statement, the GCAG described the pledge as a united stand against one of the country’s most critical environmental challenges. “By signing this pact, candidates will show their determination to fight galamsey, while encouraging collective efforts to protect our environment for future generations,” the statement read.

The Coalition emphasized that the fight against illegal mining requires collaboration across political leaders, civil society, traditional authorities, and local communities.

A press conference, scheduled for Thursday, December 5, 2024, at the International Press Centre, will reveal which presidential candidates have signed the pledge. The GCAG has invited media organizations to cover the event to help amplify the message.
