The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has confirmed it will return to the House on December 16 following a summons from Speaker Alban Bagbin.

Parliament had been suspended indefinitely after a divisive Supreme Court ruling regarding a vacant seat, which heightened tensions between the Majority and Minority. Attempts by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to reconvene the House before the upcoming election were previously rejected by the Speaker.

In a memo issued on November 26, Speaker Bagbin stated that Parliament would resume after the elections to address critical issues and ensure a smooth transition to the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic. He also provided a 14-day notice for the resumption of proceedings on December 16.

Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for South Dayi, who had initially opposed an earlier return, has now welcomed the decision. Speaking to JoyNews, he confirmed the Minority’s readiness to attend Parliament on December 16 to conduct parliamentary business, adding that other matters would be addressed as necessary.

The Majority has yet to issue an official response to Speaker Bagbin’s latest directive.
