Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi made headlines after writing “Jesus loves you” on his rainbow-colored captain’s armband during Palace’s 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town on Tuesday. The gesture came despite a reminder from the Football Association (FA) that religious messages on match attire are prohibited under Rule A4 of its kit regulations.
The armbands, part of Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign supporting the LGBTQ+ community, were issued to all Premier League clubs ahead of the weekend matches. Guéhi had previously written “I love Jesus” on his armband during Palace’s clash with Newcastle United, prompting the FA to remind both the player and the club of their responsibilities under the rules.
While the England international completed all 90 minutes on Tuesday without further incident, his actions have sparked discussion about the balance between personal expression and adherence to FA regulations. As of now, the FA has opted for a reminder rather than pursuing disciplinary action.
