The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has officially endorsed John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), ahead of the December 7 general elections.

At a press conference in Accra on December 4, 2024, the GFP’s Deputy General Secretary, Jerry Offei Addo, explained that the party’s decision was driven by the alignment of NDC’s key policies with the GFP’s objectives. These policies, including the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank, free tertiary education for able-bodied individuals, and the creation of a 24-hour economy, were seen as consistent with the GFP’s focus on women’s empowerment and supporting the underprivileged.

Offei Addo, alongside the GFP’s acting National Chairman, National Organizer, and National Youth Organizer, dismissed claims that the endorsement was a unilateral decision or contrary to the views of the party’s late founder, Akua Donkor. Despite Donkor’s previous criticisms of Mahama, Offei Addo affirmed that the endorsement aligned with the GFP’s values and mission.

He also rejected rumours that the endorsement was influenced by external pressure from the NDC, asserting that the decision was made in the best interest of the nation and the party’s supporters. “We have already started campaigning for the NDC,” Offei Addo confirmed, emphasizing the GFP’s commitment to securing an NDC victory in the upcoming election.

This endorsement adds further momentum to Mahama’s campaign, following a similar backing from the People’s National Convention (PNC) last week.
