Special voting for the Western and Eastern Regions of Ghana is set to take place today, December 5, after a delay from the original date of December 2.

The Electoral Commission (EC) rescheduled the vote following the discovery of a leak involving ballot papers in both regions. In response, the EC took swift action to ensure the credibility of the election by recalling and reprinting the affected ballots. This decision was announced by the Commission’s Chairperson, Jean Mensa, during an emergency press conference on Sunday, December 1.

The recall was deemed essential to preserve the integrity of the election process ahead of the 2024 General Election.

This year’s general election will feature 328 special voting centres nationwide, designed to accommodate 131,478 voters on the special voting list. These include members of the security services, media personnel, and election officials, who vote in advance to carry out their duties on election day.

On December 4, Deputy EC Chairperson Dr. Bossman Asare reassured the public that the Commission was fully prepared for the special voting exercise in the Western and Eastern Regions. He confirmed that all necessary materials had been dispatched to the regions, and he expressed confidence that the process would run smoothly and transparently.

“We expect all special voters in these two regions, regardless of their location, to be able to vote at their designated centres,” Dr. Asare said.
