Gyakye Quayson Wins Assin North Seat with Landslide Victory

James Gyakye Quayson, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Assin North, has successfully retained his seat in the recent 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. Representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Quayson secured 18,023 votes, which constitutes 56.35% of the total valid votes cast.

His main opponent, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 13,599 votes, amounting to 42.52%.

Quayson’s political career has been marked by significant controversy. He faced disqualification during the 2020 parliamentary elections for violating Article 94(2)(a) of Ghana’s Constitution, which prohibits individuals with dual citizenship from serving as Members of Parliament. The Supreme Court subsequently annulled the results of the 2020 elections in the Assin North constituency.

However, Quayson reclaimed his position in a by-election on June 27, 2023, and was sworn in on July 4, 2023. This latest victory reinforces his stronghold in the constituency despite ongoing legal challenges and opposition from the NPP.
