President-elect John Dramani Mahama has urged religious leaders across Ghana to support him in fulfilling the high expectations of the Ghanaian people following his victory in the 2024 elections.

Speaking after receiving a delegation from the Assemblies of God Church, Mahama acknowledged the trust and hope placed in him by voters, highlighting the significant mandate he received in the election.

“As I take on this new responsibility, I recognize the enormous expectations placed on me,” Mahama said. “I urge all religious leaders to join hands with me in guiding this nation toward prosperity and peace.”

The delegation, led by Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, visited Mahama following his official declaration as the winner by the Electoral Commission.

First Lady Lordina Mahama and former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah were also present at the meeting.

Mahama expressed deep gratitude for the church’s support throughout his political journey, emphasizing its importance to both his career and personal life. “Your prayers and guidance have been a source of strength for me,” he said. “As I lead this nation, I promise to do so with honesty and integrity.”

The president-elect also called on the church to continue praying for the nation and to lend support in tackling the challenges ahead. “This journey requires unity and collective effort, including from our religious community,” he added.

Rev. Wengam, in his prayer, asked for divine wisdom and strength for Mahama and his leadership team, also presenting him with a Bible and spiritual materials for guidance. “May God grant you wisdom and strength to lead our nation with righteousness,” he prayed.

In his address, Mahama also touched on the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill, acknowledging its sensitivity. “I understand the sensitivity of this issue, and I will approach it with careful consideration and in line with the values of our people,” he said.
