The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has strongly condemned the recent wave of violence and unrest following the 2024 general elections, urging for calm and unity across the nation.

In a statement signed by Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, President of the Conference, the bishops expressed their outrage over the violence, rioting, and looting that have disrupted peace, led to loss of life, and deepened divisions among citizens.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the acts of violence that have undermined peace and stability in parts of our beloved country,” the bishops said. “Such actions are unacceptable and go against the core values of peace, unity, and respect for life that we, as a nation, hold dear.”

The bishops called on political leaders to take responsibility for their followers’ actions, urging them to publicly denounce violence and restore order. “It is crucial that you take a stand against violence, denounce unlawful actions, and use your influence to restore calm and respect for the rule of law,” the statement added.

The bishops also called for professionalism and impartiality from security agencies in handling the violence. “We urge the Ghana Police and other security services to remain vigilant and professional. Justice must be served,” they said.

In an effort to promote peace and national cohesion, the bishops appealed to religious leaders, civil society organizations, and the public to work together to heal the nation. “Only through dialogue, mutual respect, and unity can we overcome our differences and move forward as one people,” they noted.

Concluding their statement, the bishops prayed for the nation’s healing, expressing hope that Ghana will emerge stronger and more united: “May God bless Ghana with peace, harmony, and healing in the aftermath of these turbulent events.”
