President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed all political appointees to return government-owned vehicles by 3 January 2025, reaffirming a directive first issued during his initial term in office.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Presidential Office underscored that no official vehicle shall be retained by any member of the current administration as it approaches the end of its second and final term.

The comprehensive directive covers a wide range of government officials, including:

  • Ministers of State
  • Deputy Ministers
  • Regional Ministers
  • Special Assistants
  • Presidential and Vice-Presidential Aides
  • Chairpersons and Members of Statutory Boards and Corporations

All affected appointees are required to return their government vehicles to the Chief Director of their respective Ministries by the specified deadline.

This move appears to be part of a consistent governmental effort to manage public assets efficiently and ensure a transparent transition of power. The directive, originally implemented at the conclusion of President Akufo-Addo’s first term in 2020, remains a key protocol for outgoing government officials.

Government sources suggest the measure is designed to prevent the inappropriate retention of state-owned resources during administrative transitions.

Compliance with the directive is expected to be strict, though specific penalties for non-adherence were not immediately detailed in the presidential statement.
