President-elect John Mahama has said that his government will learn from the significant loss of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the recent presidential election, underscoring that power ultimately belongs to the people, not politicians.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service at the Assemblies of God Ringway Gospel Centre in Accra on December 15, 2024, Mahama stated that his victory serves as a reminder that Ghanaians are ready to hold their leaders accountable.

“In the same way the NPP may feel the sting of their defeat, it is a lesson to those of us coming into government,” he said. “The same treatment the NPP has received, the people will reserve for any government that fails to serve them well.”

Mahama added that the people’s power is divinely given, and politicians must never forget their responsibility to serve the electorate.

He also expressed concern over what he described as the growing arrogance and self-interest among the political class in Ghana, including himself. “We’ve been in democracy since 1992, but over time, political leaders have become arrogant, forgetting that the power we wield is temporary and given by God,” Mahama said.

His comments reflect a broader critique of the political elite, urging humility and accountability as his second term approaches.
