A fire that broke out early on Tuesday, December 17, at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools in Accra has destroyed several ballot boxes from the Ablekuma North constituency. The blaze reportedly started in the school’s library, which had been temporarily used to store the ballot boxes from the December 7 general elections.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing thick smoke and flames engulfing the building shortly after the fire began. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly to the scene. Alex King Nartey, the Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed that fire officers from multiple stations, including Anyaa, Headquarters, and Circle, worked together to control the blaze. He reassured the public that most of the buildings were saved, and efforts were made to prevent the fire from reigniting.
The Ablekuma North constituency was one of the most contentious in the December 7 elections, with both the NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie and the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn claiming victory. Following a reversal of the Electoral Commission’s initial declaration, which had awarded the seat to Aubynn, the EC has ordered a re-collation exercise due to the dispute.
