President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to prioritise the fight against corruption and waste in the public sector as part of his administration’s development agenda.

In an interview with Germany-based DW TV, Mahama outlined plans for sweeping reforms aimed at strengthening governance structures, enhancing anti-corruption measures, and enforcing strict accountability within public institutions.

Acknowledging widespread frustration over the mismanagement of public resources and inefficiencies in governance, Mahama described corruption and waste as major barriers to the country’s progress. He also pointed to Ghana’s rising national debt as a key concern.

Mahama committed to implementing constitutional reforms and introducing severe penalties for individuals involved in corrupt practices. He stressed the need for a more dynamic constitution that reflects the country’s current challenges, with a focus on improving governance to reduce waste and mismanagement.

“We need to review the constitution to ensure that it supports a governance system capable of managing our resources effectively and addressing the current issues in debt management,” Mahama said. He added that his administration would work towards greater fiscal discipline and transparency in order to tackle corruption head-on.
