The Ghanaian government has issued a GH¢25 million cheque to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) as part of efforts to settle its outstanding debt, Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Education Committee, Dr. Clement Apaak, has confirmed.

The move comes after WAEC raised alarms about the impact of the government’s GH¢118 million debt, warning that delays in payment could severely affect the timely release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

While Dr. Apaak described the payment as a step in the right direction, he highlighted that it only addresses a fraction of the debt. “The GH¢25 million issued is a positive move, but it is only a small part of the GH¢118 million owed,” he said. “This is far from enough to meet WAEC’s urgent financial needs.”

John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, explained that the payment would be used to cover the cost of repairing faulty scanners, which are essential for marking objective questions in the upcoming exams.
