An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced 33-year-old Christopher Kofi Okyere Sorkpa to five years in prison for damaging five vehicles belonging to Members of Parliament and their staff.
On December 18, Sorkpa and his co-accused, 42-year-old Wisdom Ahli, both alleged preachers residing in Kasoa, sneaked into the Parliament House car park. Sorkpa, armed with an earth chisel concealed in a handbag, used the tool to smash the windscreens of two Toyota V8 SUVs, two Toyota Camry saloon cars, and one Rav 4 SUV. The damaged vehicles belonged to MPs Kwaku Okyere Agyekum of Fanteakwa South, Eugene Boakye Antwi of Subin, and three parliamentary staff members.
Sorkpa was charged with six counts, including conspiracy to commit unlawful damage and unlawful damage. He pleaded guilty to all charges. On Friday, December 20, the court sentenced him to three years for conspiracy to cause unlawful damage, with five years for each of the remaining counts. The sentences will run concurrently.
Ahli, who was reportedly praising Sorkpa for the destruction, was remanded in police custody after the court found his charges to be defective. The prosecution has requested an adjournment to amend the charges. The case has been scheduled for January 9, 2025.
