Former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Adei, has cautioned President-elect John Dramani Mahama against removing the Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Adukwei Mensa, from office, warning it would reinforce a damaging precedent.

Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues on Sunday, December 22, Professor Adei said such an action would be “disastrous” and would set a negative example for the future of Ghana’s democratic institutions. He stressed that it could lead to a situation where every president feels compelled to appoint a new EC, undermining the country’s electoral integrity.

Professor Adei also advised against any move to dismiss Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornor, urging the incoming Mahama administration to respect the judiciary, especially when there is no justification for such a step.

“Removing the Chief Justice without cause would come at a great cost to Ghana,” he warned, adding that the country must focus on strengthening its institutions rather than destabilising them.
