Traders at Accra’s Kantamanto Market have started rebuilding their stalls and shops following a devastating fire that broke out early on Thursday, January 2. The blaze destroyed more than 7,000 shops, leaving over 10,000 traders affected.

Despite the scale of the destruction, traders are determined to recover and begin the arduous task of rebuilding their businesses.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed his deep sympathy to the victims of the fire, describing the incident as “deeply shocking” during his final State of the Nation Address on Friday, December 3, 2025. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the traders, acknowledging the significant losses many have suffered.

“My thoughts and prayers are with those affected,” the President said. He also assured the public that the government is committed to assisting those impacted, pledging support to help rebuild their businesses and to investigate the cause of the fire.
