The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Tanko Musah, has urged President Akufo-Addo to acknowledge the economic difficulties faced by Ghanaians during his tenure.

In response to the President’s final State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered on January 3, 2025, Musah pointed to the high cost of living and the erosion of workers’ earnings due to inflation under the current administration.

While President Akufo-Addo highlighted positive economic indicators, such as a 7% GDP growth and over $8 billion in gross international reserves, Musah expressed dissatisfaction with these achievements. He argued that they fail to address the real challenges faced by ordinary Ghanaians.

Musah called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama to prioritise the economy, warning that the incoming administration must act swiftly to meet public expectations. “The overwhelming support he received cannot be lost on him, and whatever he can do to improve the economy must be implemented,” Musah said.

The GNAT leader also appealed for Mahama to engage with key private sector groups, such as the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and the Ghana Employers’ Association (GEA), to create job opportunities, particularly for the youth. He stressed that the public sector is oversaturated, and collaboration with these groups will be vital to addressing employment issues.

Musah further recommended that President-elect Mahama hold regular media engagements to gather feedback from the public, saying that such interactions are crucial for effective governance. “He must navigate through various advisers and stay connected to the people’s concerns,” he advised.
