President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially commissioned the new 250-bed Ashanti Regional Hospital and an adjacent 50-bed Infectious Disease Centre in Sewua, located in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region, on Saturday, January 4, 2025. The new hospital aims to address significant healthcare challenges and ease the burden on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ghana’s second-largest referral facility.

The hospital is now the third-largest healthcare facility in the region, after Komfo Anokye and the Afari Military Hospital. It includes advanced medical facilities such as an administration block, an outpatient department, an intensive care unit (ICU), maternity and delivery suites, a physiotherapy unit, a laboratory and pharmacy, a theatre complex, and a medical gas plant. The accompanying Infectious Disease Centre, one of 12 built nationwide using COVID-19 funding, is designed to improve the management of infectious diseases.

The project is part of the Euroget hospital initiative, which was first launched in 2008 under former President John Agyekum Kufuor. To date, seven of the nine planned hospitals have been completed under the current administration, including the 500-bed Military Hospital at Afari and the 160-bed Wa Regional Hospital.

In his remarks at the inauguration, President Akufo-Addo called on local leaders and residents to ensure proper maintenance of the hospital’s facilities and equipment. The President also commissioned an additional Infectious Disease Centre at the Kumasi South Hospital in Chirapatre.

However, the ceremony was overshadowed by a dispute with the project’s contractor. Euroget De-Invest S.A. has raised concerns, claiming that the hospital was commissioned before it was fully completed and that payment for the project is still pending. The company issued a statement asserting that the site remains under its possession and that they did not authorize the commissioning. Euroget has called for a thorough investigation into what it describes as an unlawful act by the President.
