The Office of the President of Ghana has dismissed reports claiming that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo granted a presidential pardon to 11 individuals.

In a statement issued on January 6, 2025, Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the Presidency, clarified that the reports were incorrect. He emphasized that President Akufo-Addo had not exercised his prerogative of mercy to pardon the individuals mentioned in the media, contrary to earlier reports.

The individuals named in the claims included William Ato Essien, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the collapse of Capital Bank. Essien, who has been struggling with severe health issues, had reportedly defaulted on a GHS 90 million fine.

Other names mentioned in the media were Philip Akpeena Assibit, convicted in 2018 for causing financial loss to the state, and Akwasi Alhassan, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence for a 1993 crime.

The President’s office strongly refuted the claims, urging the public to disregard any false reports and rely on official statements from the President’s office.
