President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to uncap the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) levy in the upcoming budget to improve healthcare access across Ghana.

Speaking at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on January 12, 2025, Mahama reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring equitable healthcare for all Ghanaians, regardless of their location or economic status.

“We will prioritise healthcare and ensure that every Ghanaian has access to quality medical care,” he stated. He also revealed plans to compile an inventory of uncompleted health facilities and develop a programme to complete them.

Mahama explained that uncapping the NHIS levy is essential for increasing funds available to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), enabling it to reimburse healthcare providers more effectively.

The President also highlighted education as a key focus for his administration, outlining plans to improve infrastructure, provide better resources for teachers, and expand access to technology for students. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to enhance critical sectors of the nation’s development.
