The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has launched a major revenue mobilisation initiative called ‘Operation Keep The Lights On,’ which will run from January 15 to January 31, 2025. The exercise aims to recover outstanding debts and ensure the integrity of prepaid meters across the country.

The operation, which will cover all ECG operational areas, was announced in a public notice issued on January 13, 2025. It will focus on customers with arrears and involve inspections of prepaid meters to detect tampering or illegal connections.

Objectives of the Operation
The main goal of ‘Operation Keep The Lights On’ is to recover unpaid bills from various customer categories. ECG has warned that reconnecting services after disconnection is a criminal offence and will not be tolerated.

In addition to debt recovery, the operation will also involve thorough checks of prepaid meters to ensure they are functioning properly and free from tampering. The company stressed that the initiative is essential for improving its financial sustainability and service delivery.

Impact on ECG Operations
During the exercise, ECG’s regional and district offices will operate with a reduced staff to allow personnel to focus on the mobilisation efforts. Despite the lean staffing, essential services will continue to be provided at the offices to minimise inconvenience to customers.

The company has been grappling with high levels of unpaid bills from both private and public institutions, contributing to its ongoing financial difficulties.
