President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to make restoring peace in Bawku a key priority of his administration. Speaking during a visit to the region on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Mahama assured residents that his government is determined to address the ongoing conflict and bring lasting stability to the area.

During his address, the president recalled his campaign promise to prioritize peace in Bawku, stating, “If God granted our desire and I was elected president, bringing peace to Bawku was going to be one of my number one priorities.” He added that the visit, which marks his first major assignment outside of Accra since his swearing-in, underscores his commitment to resolving the conflict.

Mahama acknowledged the hardships faced by the people of Bawku, who have lived under stress and fear due to the ongoing unrest. Reflecting on the period of calm and prosperity during his previous administration, he vowed to restore that stability.

To expedite the process, Mahama revealed that key appointments for security-related roles, including Minister of Defense, Minister of Interior, and National Security Advisor, would be made within the week. These appointments, he said, would help ensure the effective handling of security issues in the region.

The president also called for patience from residents as his administration takes steps to resolve the conflict, assuring them that peace will be restored with time and effort.

“I want to assure you that I am fully apprised of the issues, and I am committed to dealing with them,” Mahama said. “Trust in myself and this administration, and by the grace of God, peace will be restored permanently to Bawku.”
