President John Dramani Mahama is set to meet with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, on Sunday, January 19, to address the growing tensions in Bawku and Walewale, where chieftaincy conflicts have been escalating in recent months.

The news came during Mahama’s visit to the Nayiri Palace, where he spoke with Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, the King and Overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom. Mahama expressed deep concern about the ongoing violence in the Upper East and Northern regions, which has resulted in numerous deaths and widespread destruction. He linked the unrest to disputes between two ethnic factions over chieftaincy matters.

Calling for peace and stability, Mahama highlighted the Asantehene’s ability to mediate conflicts and expressed optimism that Sunday’s meeting would help pave the way for lasting solutions to the ongoing crisis.
