Ahmed Ibrahim, Ghana’s Local Government Minister nominee, has expressed his support for the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), but emphasized that such elections should be conducted on a non-partisan basis.

During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, January 21, Ibrahim argued that non-partisan elections would safeguard the independence of MMDCEs, allowing them to focus on local governance without being influenced by political parties.

“I agree that the election of MMDCEs is necessary, but I disagree that it should be on a partisan basis,” Ibrahim stated, highlighting the long-standing debate between his party and the previous government on the issue.

Ibrahim further stressed that this change would empower MMDCEs to address the developmental needs of their communities without the constraints of party politics, fostering a more effective and focused local government system.
