Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has condemned New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmakers for politicizing the recent deadly clashes in Obuasi, which resulted in the deaths of nine individuals.

Speaking outside Parliament on Tuesday, Forson accused the opposition of using the tragedy for political advantage instead of offering sympathy for the victims. He specifically addressed claims from the NPP that the incident was tied to political violence.

“The NDC Majority in Parliament strongly condemns the NPP Minority’s attempts to exploit this unfortunate development in Obuasi,” Forson said. “Rather than expressing condolences to the families affected and acknowledging the government’s prompt response, the NPP is engaging in opportunistic politicking.”

Forson also urged the NPP to come to terms with its electoral defeat, which he argued was the root of their political manoeuvring. “The NPP should accept the results of the election and allow the newly elected government to govern as mandated by the people of Ghana,” he added.

The Finance Minister reassured the public that the government would carry out an impartial investigation into the Obuasi incident, as directed by President John Dramani Mahama. “An efficient and thorough investigation will be conducted, and the NDC does not condone violence,” he said.

The Obuasi clashes, involving illegal miners and military personnel, have raised tensions in the region, prompting calls for calm and a full investigation into the events.
