Naa Momo Lartey, President John Dramani Mahama’s nominee for the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, has pledged to advocate for extended maternity leave in Ghana, aiming to increase the current three-month period.
During her vetting before Parliament on January 22, Lartey outlined her commitment to improving support for working mothers. She proposed a six-month maternity leave to allow women adequate time to recover and care for their newborns. “It’s essential for women to have enough time to heal and bond with their children,” Lartey said.
Lartey also highlighted the need for broader reforms, including potential parental leave for fathers, to encourage shared caregiving responsibilities. This approach, she argued, would foster greater gender equity and align with evolving family structures.
The nominee indicated her intention to engage with various stakeholders, including civil society organizations and gender advocacy groups, to ensure these policy changes are realized. “I will work closely with advocates and stakeholders to push for the best outcomes,” Lartey affirmed, adding that she would be a strong proponent of these reforms if they align with public support.
Lartey’s proposal comes as part of her broader agenda to strengthen social protections and improve family welfare in Ghana.
