The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has debunked a viral social media video containing allegations of misconduct, describing the claims as false and misleading. The video, which has been widely circulated, purports that EC-branded bags containing destroyed ballot papers were instead used to smuggle dollars on behalf of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a statement signed by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman for Operations, the Commission clarified that the video in question is a deliberate manipulation. “The original audio has been replaced with a false narrative,” Mr. Tettey stated, emphasizing that the claims are unfounded.

The EC explained that the destroyed ballot papers captured in the video were printed for the Ahafo and Volta regions but had to be scrapped due to serialization errors.

The destruction, according to the Commission, was carried out by waste management company Zoomlion and was conducted under the direct supervision of EC officials. Media personnel were also invited to cover the process to ensure transparency.

“The public should disregard these baseless claims,” the statement urged, highlighting that certificates of destruction and the unedited video serve as evidence of the Commission’s integrity.
