A first-year student at Saboba EP Senior High School in Ghana’s Northern Region has tragically died in a fire at the school’s girls’ dormitory. The student, identified as Binidan Theresah, was reportedly burned beyond recognition after the blaze broke out.
Witnesses said Theresah, who had been feeling unwell, stayed behind in the dormitory while the other students were evacuated. The dormitory was locked during the outbreak to prevent anyone from knowing she was inside. When the fire began, no one remembered that Theresah was still there. After the fire was finally put out, her body was discovered.
The remains of Theresah have been taken to the Saboba Hospital, where they are being held for further examination.
In an interview with Joynews, a student who wished to remain anonymous described the devastating scene. “She was sick, and everyone thought she was outside the dorm,” the student said. “When the fire started, nobody remembered her until it was too late.”
The fire also destroyed students’ personal belongings, including books and uniforms.
Saboba’s District Fire Officer, ADO 1 Yussif Issahaku, explained that the fire department faced technical difficulties when they arrived on the scene. The fire truck’s pump malfunctioned, forcing firefighters to rely on buckets to put out the flames. “We tested the pump earlier and it worked fine, but it failed when we reached the scene,” Issahaku said. “We had to resort to manual efforts, with the help of staff and students, to control the fire. It’s incredibly unfortunate that one life was lost.”
Issahaku also warned that dry weather conditions are making fires more frequent and urged the community to be cautious with open flames.
