Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has given a newly formed technical committee a one-month deadline to develop a roadmap for the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The seven-member committee, which includes energy experts and key stakeholders, will work to create a plan focused on improving ECG’s efficiency and service delivery by involving the private sector.

Speaking after the inauguration of the committee, Jinapor reassured the public that the government was not planning to sell ECG. Instead, he emphasized that the goal was to engage the private sector in the management of the company while ensuring local participation.

“We are not selling ECG, but we want to involve the private sector in a transparent and responsible manner,” he said. “The committee is tasked with consulting all relevant stakeholders—including workers, unions, consumers, and others—to ensure a thorough and inclusive process.”

Jinapor also warned that urgent action was needed to address the challenges facing the energy sector. “The sector is bleeding, and if we do not act quickly, it could collapse,” he said, stressing the need for a competitive and transparent process to turn the sector around.
