Haruna Iddrisu, Minister for Education, announced plans for a nationwide solar energy initiative aimed at providing reliable electricity to all basic and senior high schools. The initiative, set to roll out this year, aims to reduce schools’ reliance on the national power grid.

“We plan to install solar power in all basic and senior high schools to help take them off the national grid,” Iddrisu said during a press briefing on January 24 to mark the International Day of Education, which carried the theme “AI and Education: Human Agency in an Automated World.”

The Education Minister also emphasized the importance of improving internet connectivity as part of the country’s preparations for a future driven by artificial intelligence. He stressed the need for cooperation with the Ministry of Communication and private sector partners to expand broadband infrastructure.

“We need to extend fiber and broadband to all educational institutions, particularly public tertiary institutions,” Iddrisu said, highlighting the critical role of internet access in modernizing education.

In addition, Iddrisu called for concerted efforts from both the private sector and international organizations to dismantle systemic barriers that limit educational access for marginalized groups, including girls, children, and individuals with disabilities.

The initiatives are part of Ghana’s broader effort to modernize its educational infrastructure and prepare students for the challenges and opportunities presented by a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
