Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has explained that his early concession in the 2024 presidential election was driven by a commitment to protect Ghana’s democracy and national peace.

Speaking on January 27 during a discussion on democracy, governance, and political integrity in Nigeria, Dr. Bawumia reflected on the circumstances surrounding his decision. He shared that he had anticipated it would take 48 to 72 hours for the Electoral Commission to officially announce the results. However, with tensions rising and the risk of violence mounting due to the delay, he chose to act swiftly.

“I was aware of the growing tension and the potential for unrest if the results were not announced quickly,” he said. “The situation was becoming volatile, and I knew something needed to be done to prevent a crisis.”

Dr. Bawumia explained that, despite the official results not being declared, he made the strategic decision to hold a press conference the morning after the election to concede to his opponent. This, he said, was done in an effort to defuse potential conflict and demonstrate political maturity.

His early concession was part of his broader commitment to ensuring a peaceful transfer of power in Ghana, emphasizing that maintaining the integrity of the country’s democratic processes is paramount.

In his remarks, Dr. Bawumia reinforced the need for political integrity, transparency, and respect for democratic values in maintaining effective governance.
