In a significant breakthrough for kidney care in Ghana, doctors in the Ashanti Region have successfully performed the region’s first-ever kidney transplant, offering new hope for patients battling chronic kidney disease.

The historic procedure was carried out through a collaboration between the Kidney Specialist Center and HopeXchange Medical Centre in Kumasi. It involved a patient in his mid-forties, who had been living with kidney disease for five years and undergoing dialysis for the past year. After extensive consultations with medical experts, the patient opted for a kidney transplant.

Dr. Elliot Koranteng Tannor, a consultant nephrologist and lead surgeon for the procedure, described the successful transplant as a major advancement in the region’s medical capabilities. He revealed that the cost of the first transplant was approximately $25,000, with future surgeries expected to range from $30,000 to $35,000.

Dr. Tannor expressed optimism for the future of kidney care in the region, encouraging patients to remain hopeful and reassured that more transplants will be performed to improve lives. “This is something we are hoping will continue, and it has come to stay here in Kumasi,” he said.

This achievement marks a significant step in reducing the region’s dependence on dialysis and making life-saving kidney treatments more accessible to patients in need.
