North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to arrange mass health screenings for senior high school (SHS) students following allegations that expired rice was repackaged and distributed to schools.
Mr Ablakwa, speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, November 23, claimed medical experts warn that prolonged consumption of infested rice could lead to severe health complications, including liver cancer.
“If we had a president who truly cared, he would have ordered health screening for all SHS students by now. Doctors tell me that consuming infested rice can cause liver cancer. Any leader with empathy would act to safeguard our children,” he stated.
The MP alleged that Moshosho rice, with a “best before” date in 2023, was repackaged for school feeding programs after expiration. He criticized Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare for dismissing his claims as propaganda, describing her remarks as “reckless and irresponsible.”
“The Chief of Staff is expected to coordinate investigations, yet she disregards the facts and jumps to reckless conclusions,” Ablakwa said. “Can’t we respect our laws and adhere to standards?”
These allegations have sparked concern among stakeholders, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
