A Governance Expert, Kwasi Yirenkyi, has criticised the decision by President-elect John Mahama to establish a team as part of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative.

Yirenkyi argues that the creation of this committee is unnecessary, as existing state institutions already possess the authority and resources to carry out the work, including gathering evidence and prosecuting offenders.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on December 18, Yirenkyi questioned the need for a new team, stating, “There are state bodies like the Attorney General’s office, the EOCO, the CID, the BNI, and now the NIB, which are already empowered to carry out these tasks.”

He further expressed concern over the potential inefficiency of the new committee, suggesting that any information or evidence gathered would ultimately need to be acted upon by the aforementioned agencies, which are already equipped to handle such cases.

Mahama’s transition team had announced the formation of the ORAL team as a preparatory step towards recovering proceeds of corruption and holding those responsible accountable when he takes office. The team is tasked with gathering information from the public and other sources on suspected acts of corruption.
