Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has been summoned to Parliament to address concerns over the deportation of Ghanaians from the United States. Ablakwa is expected to appear before lawmakers on Friday, 28 February 2025, to respond to questions regarding the treatment of deportees.

The call for his appearance follows growing concerns about the conditions faced by Ghanaians detained in US facilities prior to their deportation. Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, has been vocal about the issue, expressing alarm over reports of inhumane treatment of deported citizens.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on 21 February, Fordjour said the scale of the deportations was concerning, but he stressed the “disturbing” conditions in US detention centers. “Our citizens are enduring degrading and inhumane treatment,” he said, adding that news reports painted a bleak picture of their experiences.

Fordjour also called for the creation of integration centres in Ghana to assist returning citizens and facilitate their reintegration into society. He urged the government to take action both to support deportees and to address the wider issues of migration management.
