The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association in Accra has announced plans to begin removing foreign nationals involved in petty trading from the area, starting Monday, 8 September 2025.

In a statement signed by the Association’s Director of Communications, Takyi Addo, the group said the move is aimed at enforcing Section 27(1) of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act, 2013 (Act 865), which bars non-Ghanaians from engaging in petty trading, hawking, and operating market stalls.

The Association said many foreigners continue to trade illegally in spaces such as Abossey Okai, which they argue is undermining the livelihoods of Ghanaian traders and threatening local businesses.

“Successive governments have failed to enforce this law, and that failure has taken a toll on local entrepreneurs,” the statement said. “It is time to uphold the law and protect Ghanaian businesses from unfair competition.”

The group stressed that it does not oppose foreign investment in Ghana and recognises its importance to national development. However, it said all investors must adhere to the country’s trade laws.

The Association is calling on government agencies and stakeholders to support its efforts, saying the action is necessary to preserve the integrity of Ghana’s trading environment and safeguard the future of indigenous businesses.
