Kofi Akpaloo, the presidential candidate and leader of Ghana’s Liberal Party (LPG), is under investigation for a series of alleged financial crimes, according to Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai.

Mr. Akpaloo was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on September 3 in Kumasi and remains in custody, despite being granted police bail. Authorities say he is being investigated on multiple charges, including fraud, money laundering, causing financial loss to the state, and the dissipation of public funds.

Police granted Mr. Akpaloo bail in the amount of 10 million Ghanaian cedis (approximately $830,000), with two sureties required to justify the bond. As of Friday, those conditions had not been met, and Mr. Akpaloo remained in EOCO custody.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Mr. Srem-Sai confirmed the arrest and detailed the ongoing investigation. “Suspect Percival Kofi Akpaloo is under investigation on allegations of various financial crimes,” he wrote.

Mr. Akpaloo, a vocal figure in Ghana’s political scene, ran in the 2024 presidential election on a platform focused largely on youth-oriented policies. While his party holds no seats in parliament, it has garnered growing attention amid dissatisfaction with the country’s major political parties.

Representatives for the Liberal Party have not publicly commented on the investigation.

The EOCO, Ghana’s specialized agency for financial and organized crime, has not disclosed further details on the nature or timeline of the alleged offenses.
