Outgoing Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly condemned the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Committee set up by President-elect John Dramani Mahama, calling it a “needless” initiative driven by personal vendetta.
In a statement, Afenyo-Markin described the committee as lacking constitutional backing and argued that it was established solely for personal retribution rather than legitimate governance. “I hold the humble view that it is a needless committee,” he said, criticizing its purpose.
ORAL, which is chaired by Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is tasked with investigating alleged corruption within the outgoing government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and referring the cases to relevant authorities for prosecution.
However, Afenyo-Markin warned that allowing the committee to proceed could disrupt the country’s governance. “If we allow this committee to continue with its so-called wild goose chase, it will disrupt the governance of this country,” he said, urging the incoming administration to reconsider its approach.
The outgoing Majority Leader also suggested that corruption issues should be addressed through existing state institutions with legal mandates, rather than creating new bodies like ORAL. He stressed that the rule of law should prevail and cautioned against using unconstitutional measures to target individuals.
“We are not going to allow you to use unconstitutional means to silence us, to frustrate people, and to chase individuals into their homes,” Afenyo-Markin concluded during the dissolution of the 8th Parliament.
