Ghana has restored a fourth power generation unit at the Akosombo Dam, marking a further step toward stabilizing electricity supply after a recent fire disrupted operations at the facility.
Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor said in a statement posted to Facebook late April 28 that the unit was brought online at 9:09 p.m., hours after a third unit had been successfully restored. The phased recovery reflects what officials describe as accelerated efforts to rebuild lost generation capacity.
The fire, which affected the dam’s substation control room, knocked more than 1,000 megawatts offline, straining the national grid and leading to intermittent outages across the country.
The return of additional units is expected to ease supply pressures and improve grid reliability, though engineers continue to work to fully restore operations at the hydroelectric facility, a cornerstone of Ghana’s power system.
Technical teams have been working շուրջ the clock under challenging conditions to repair damaged infrastructure. Government officials say efforts remain focused on restoring all units and strengthening system resilience to prevent future disruptions.
Authorities maintain that the gradual return of capacity should help stabilize electricity supply for households and businesses in the coming days.
