President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is set to inaugurate the newly constructed Flower Pot Interchange today, November 19. The project, aimed at easing traffic congestion, is expected to significantly enhance transportation along the Tema Motorway corridor.
The new flyover will provide smoother connectivity between northern and southern sections of the motorway, facilitating travel between key areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema. Residents and commuters are expected to benefit from reduced travel times and improved road safety.
The interchange includes an 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct with asphalt surfacing, a 140-meter ramp connecting Shiashie to Airport Hills, and an 80-meter ramp linking the viaduct to the motorway towards Tema. Additional features include a new road through the old East Legon tunnel, 200 meters of roadway linking Cantonments from the Giffard Road interchange, and an upgraded Flower Pot roundabout. Pedestrian walkways, streetlights, road markings, and traffic signals have also been installed to ensure safety and convenience.
The project, which began on March 7, 2017, was executed by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Ltd, with Deoke Consult Ltd as the supervising consultant. Funded by Afrexim Bank and the Government of Ghana, the 93-month contract marks a significant investment in the country’s infrastructure.
The interchange is expected to play a pivotal role in improving transportation and supporting economic activities in Accra and surrounding areas.
