Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change, has criticised former President John Agyekum Kufuor for endorsing Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate for Ghana’s 2024 elections.
Mr Kufuor, who served as Ghana’s president from 2001 to 2009, publicly backed Dr Bawumia during an interview on Sunday, 17 November. He described the vice-president as the best candidate to lead Ghana, citing his economic expertise and experience.
“Given the current global circumstances, I firmly believe that Ghana’s economy will experience significant improvement if Bawumia is elected president,” Mr Kufuor said. “With divine guidance, he is capable of delivering on this promise.”
He highlighted Dr Bawumia’s contributions to Ghana’s economy during his administration, particularly his role at the Bank of Ghana under former governor Dr Paul Acquah.
However, Mr Kyerematen, speaking on Oyerepa TV on Monday, 18 November, expressed disappointment in Mr Kufuor’s comments, saying they compromise the impartiality expected from a statesman of his stature.
“Kufuor is my uncle, and I hesitate to publicly criticise him,” Mr Kyerematen said. “However, his endorsement has cast a significant shadow over his political career and sparked widespread public criticism.”
Mr Kyerematen, a former trade minister and one-time NPP stalwart, left the party in September to form the Movement for Change after accusing the NPP of marginalising him.
He cautioned that Mr Kufuor’s decision to engage in active partisan politics could harm his legacy as a respected national figure.
“Kufuor has long been a unifying figure in Ghanaian politics, so his decision to openly support a candidate risks eroding the respect he commands across the country,” he added.
The endorsement has ignited debate in Ghana, with some viewing it as a boost for Dr Bawumia’s campaign and others questioning the former president’s neutrality.
