Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has suggested that “evil people” in Ghana are the reason the national team has been unable to secure a major trophy in recent years.
In a viral Instagram Live session, Gyan opened up about his frustrations with the state of Ghanaian football, explaining that certain unnamed individuals have contributed to the country’s failure to win trophies. “There are evil people in this country; that’s why we can’t win anything because of these people. They have tarnished Ghana’s reputation with dirt,” Gyan said.
Ghana has not won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for 43 years and will not be participating in this year’s tournament in Morocco. Although Gyan refrained from naming those he believes are responsible, his comments hinted at political figures.
He further revealed that some of these individuals exploited his popularity for political gain, referencing his involvement with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign for vice president. Gyan had been appointed as chairman of the youth and sports sub-committee for the NPP’s manifesto committee but stepped down six months later.
Instead, Gyan has shifted focus to empowering the youth through sports initiatives. He announced plans to create sports academies, training centres, and mentorship programs through the Asamoah Gyan Foundation, aiming to provide opportunities for young Ghanaians.
