Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has called on Ghanaians to unite in support of the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government following the peaceful conclusion of the 2024 elections.

In a social media post, Gyan congratulated John Dramani Mahama and the NDC, who secured a victory over the New Patriotic Party (NPP), marking Mahama’s return to power after eight years in opposition.

Gyan emphasized the importance of national unity, urging citizens to put aside partisan politics and focus on supporting the new government. “Let’s support the government. Any government that comes to power, let’s support them,” he said, highlighting the negative impact of profiteering on the country’s economy. “When you go and buy things at GHC 50 and you sell them at GHC 1000, the country will go through hardship,” he remarked.

The former footballer also stressed the need for a change in attitude to help the country progress. “We also have to change our attitudes, and we have to support the new government. Let’s congratulate the new government, and that is my message,” he added.

Gyan, who had previously been involved in politics as chairman of the Youth and Sports sub-committee for the NPP’s 2024 manifesto team, stepped back from partisan politics in September 2024, choosing instead to focus on philanthropy and youth empowerment.

Despite his political withdrawal, Gyan remains a respected figure in Ghana, and his call for unity resonated with many as he urged citizens to support the NDC administration rather than sabotage it.
