The National Chairman of Ghana’s opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has instructed the party’s members of parliament to boycott any emergency recall of Parliament.
Speaking during a campaign event in Asasetre, located in the Ellembelle constituency of the Western Region, Mr Nketia criticised attempts he claims could undermine Ghana’s democratic institutions. He emphasised the importance of protecting the country’s democratic foundations, which he argued could be at risk.
“Parliament is the backbone of Ghana’s democratic system. Without its active involvement, democracy cannot thrive,” Mr Nketia said. “Ignoring or weakening Parliament paves the way for authoritarianism. We must rally behind it as it embodies the will of the people and ensures that power is not concentrated in the hands of one individual.”
He further warned that a weakened Parliament could doom Ghana’s democratic governance and called on citizens to remain vigilant in defending the institution.
Amid concerns from judges that government business could collapse if Parliament fails to convene, Mr Nketia dismissed these warnings as unfounded. “No government business will collapse,” he said, adding that the NDC remains committed to defending Ghana’s democracy.
The NDC leader’s directive is likely to heighten political tensions in the country, as Parliament plays a critical role in policy and governance. Mr Nketia reaffirmed the party’s commitment to upholding democratic principles, insisting that a strong Parliament is essential to prevent the concentration of power.
