The Deputy Attorney-General of Ghana, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, has rejected claims that the Attorney-General’s office is being prejudicial in the case involving former National Signal Bureau Director Kwabena Adu Boahene.
Appearing on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, March 24, Dr. Srem-Sai defended comments made by Dr. Dominic Ayine, the Attorney-General, who suggested that the evidence against Adu Boahene was strong enough to secure a conviction. He emphasized that such statements are not out of the ordinary, as the Attorney-General, by nature, takes a position in the cases it prosecutes.
“Attorney Generals always take a stance on any case they bring to court. They have a position,” Dr. Srem-Sai explained. “The Attorney-General is not an arbiter who is required to be neutral or avoid prejudicing the case.”
The remarks followed concerns from members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament, who argued that the Attorney-General’s public confidence in securing a conviction could influence public opinion and affect judicial processes.
However, Dr. Srem-Sai reiterated that it is standard for the Attorney-General to express confidence in the cases it pursues. “Anytime the Attorney-General arrests someone or brings a person before court, they are always stating that they have what it takes to secure a conviction,” he added.
Mr. Adu Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, were arrested in connection with an alleged financial misconduct case involving a $7 million cyber defence contract. They are currently in custody, working to meet bail conditions, although they have yet to be formally charged.
