Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin said the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill—widely known as Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ+ bill—will be passed by the current legislature, signaling renewed momentum for one of the country’s most contentious pieces of proposed legislation.
Speaking at a forum with traditional leaders and local stakeholders in Kasoa, Mr. Bagbin attributed earlier delays to the decision by former President Nana Akufo-Addo not to assent to the measure after it was approved by the previous Parliament.
Mr. Bagbin said the bill reflects views expressed during public consultations and aligns with positions held by many community leaders and traditional authorities. He added that the current Parliament, which differs in composition from its predecessor, is better positioned to see the legislation through.
“Be assured, the law will be passed,” he said, noting that the prior Parliament’s term ended before the bill could be enacted.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, which seeks to regulate issues related to sexual orientation and family norms, has prompted vigorous debate in Ghana, drawing both strong backing and criticism from various segments of society.
