Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, has condemned the Electoral Commission (EC) over ballot paper shortages in the Volta Region, calling it a clear indication of the EC’s incompetence.
On November 28, the EC acknowledged shortages of both parliamentary and presidential ballot papers in several key constituencies, including Keta, Ketu North, Ho Central, Hohoe, and Ho West. The issue has raised concerns about the EC’s capacity to ensure a smooth and efficient electoral process.
Speaking to JoyNews at the Legal Green Forum for law students and lawyers, Mogtari criticised the EC for failing to fulfil its responsibilities. “This is not the first time we’ve pointed out that the Electoral Commission is not up to the task,” she said, adding, “They are not acting as an independent body. We’ve always suspected this because of the many partisans serving as commissioners.”
Mogtari further alleged that the shortages could be part of a larger systemic issue, even suggesting that they may be deliberate. “We are being told that the printing houses are producing more than they need. The beauty of this is that we are now very vigilant, exposing the EC’s biases and incompetence,” she stated.
The spokesperson for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) reiterated her party’s commitment to ensuring the integrity of the elections. “This is an election the NDC is poised to win. Ghanaians are yearning for change, and we will make sure every ballot is protected,” Mogtari added. She also assured that NDC polling agents had been thoroughly trained ahead of the vote.
