Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stepped up to support traders affected by the devastating fire that recently tore through the Adum market in Kumasi. On Tuesday, March 25, he visited the scene of the disaster and donated GH¢200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to help rebuild the businesses destroyed in the blaze.

The fire, which broke out on Friday, March 24, wreaked havoc in the heart of the bustling business district, leaving traders with nothing but the ashes of their years of hard work. Goods worth millions of Ghana cedis were lost, and many businesses were reduced to rubble.

Dr. Bawumia expressed deep sympathy for the traders and reassured them of his support, urging others to join in helping the affected individuals recover. “I am donating GH¢200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to aid in the rebuilding process, and I encourage private individuals and businesses to come together and help restore livelihoods,” he said during his visit.

In an emotional moment, some of the traders, visibly distraught, shared their heartbreak at losing their life’s work in a matter of hours. Dr. Bawumia listened attentively and offered words of encouragement, emphasizing the importance of patience as investigations into the fire’s cause continue.

“We must wait for the findings of the Ghana National Fire Service. Once the cause is determined, we can work on preventing future incidents,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia also called on the government to fast-track the completion of the much-needed Phase II of the Kejetia Central Market project, which he mentioned was 80% complete when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) left office.

In addition, he took a moment to commend the bravery of the firefighters who fought the blaze. Their quick action, he noted, prevented further damage. “I also want to acknowledge the efforts of the fire service personnel who did their best to contain the fire. Two of them are currently hospitalized, and we wish them a speedy recovery,” he added.

The former vice president was accompanied by several officials, including the Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), as well as other party figures.
