Former Vice President and immediate past flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has contributed GH₵410,000 (approximately $29,000) to support the party’s parliamentary candidate in Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, ahead of a contested election re-run in 19 polling stations.
The financial support comes despite the NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) decision to boycott the re-run, citing concerns over electoral integrity. Ms. Afriyie, however, has broken ranks with the party leadership, insisting she rightfully won the seat in the 2024 general election and is determined to prove her mandate at the ballot box.
Dr. Bawumia’s office confirmed the donation, describing it as part of his ongoing commitment to party unity and electoral competitiveness. “As the immediate past flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Bawumia feels a duty to support the party’s presence and participation in key constituencies, including Ablekuma North,” a spokesperson said.
Ms. Afriyie, a former Member of Parliament, is seen by allies as a resilient figure aiming to consolidate her position in a constituency long considered an NPP stronghold. The re-run, scheduled following legal and procedural disputes, has emerged as a focal point in the broader post-election tensions within the party.
