Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is set to officially launch electric buses (EVs) for pilot operations in Accra this week, marking a significant step in the government’s push for electric vehicle adoption in the country.
The arrival of the electric buses is part of Dr. Bawumia’s advocacy for the use of EVs as a cost-saving measure. Earlier this year, he announced plans to introduce electric vehicles into public transportation, citing their lower operational costs as a way to reduce the overall cost of living in Ghana.
As part of this initiative, a number of electric buses have already been procured for a pilot programme in Accra. The buses are expected to reduce public transport costs by as much as 40-50% compared to current rates, according to Dr. Bawumia.
The first symbolic trial of the electric buses is set to take place on the Adenta-Accra route on Wednesday. If successful, the programme will expand to other parts of the capital, with a second batch of buses arriving early next year to extend the initiative to Kumasi and other regions of the country.
